The Around Readers

In the 1960s, Martin Cort made several appearances with The Company of Three, which included Dame Sybil Thorndyke, Sir Lewis Casson, Marius Goring and Rumer Godden. With the help of sponsorship and guest appearances by Rumer Godden, Martin Cort established The Around Readers (TAR), performing poetry readings in schools.  Rumer Godden's "Around" Series includes:

  • Around the Day
  • Around the Year
  • Around the World
  • The World Around
  • I love you, I love you, I love you.

Martin Cort extended the idea to adults using the same narrative, poetic style, in

  • This Year, Next Year
  • Around London
  • Around the Zoo.

As the years went by, many of the children maintained their interest, so that TAR's poetry programmes broadened to embrace a family audience. This naturally led to TAR's first pantomime, Cinderella, for the Camden Festival, and to voiceover recordings for Da Silva Puppets marionette company:  click on the image for a one-page PDF about the Da Silva voiceovers. 

Further TAR productions included Puss in Boots, Dick Whittington and Dear Mr Kennedy, starring Sarah Thomas.
